Can Step Counts Tell How Hard a Walk Was? Use Cadence
Your step count tells one part of the story. Learn how cadence can help you understand the intensity of your walks.
If you look at your step count, can you tell how hard a walk was (intensity)? The evidence says: sometimes—if you focus on cadence (steps per minute), not just total steps.
What the research supports about steps and intensity
Cadence (steps/min) links more closely to how hard you’re working
Walking “intensity” is often expressed in metabolic equivalents (METs), which reflect energy expenditure. Across treadmill and overground walking studies, mean walking cadence correlates strongly with intensity (reported as METs), with a reported correlation of r = 0.93. In that body of work, 100 steps/min is a reasonable heuristic for at least absolutely-defined moderate intensity (about ≥3 METs) in adults. Using cadence to study free-living ambulatory behaviour
A key practical point: this evidence is about cadence over time, not whether your outing hit an exact steps total.
Why “same steps” can mean different intensity
Step-based energy estimates can be systematically off at different stride rates
A pedometer validation study tested treadmill walking at stride frequencies of 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120 steps/min. Compared with a metabolic cart, the pedometer underestimated energy expenditure at 80 steps/min and overestimated it at 90 and at 100–120 steps/min. It also measured step counts most accurately at 100–120 steps/min, but the energy-estimation bias still changed with stride frequency. So even if two walks produce similar step counts, the relationship to measured energy expenditure can shift depending on your cadence during the walk.
Your tracker can change your step totals (especially across device types)
Even “total steps” don’t mean the same thing across wearables. In a CDC report comparing a wrist-worn Fitbit to a hip-worn Omron (with a criterion device), the average difference in total steps between monitors was about 6% in a laboratory setting and 11.4% in real-world conditions. This measurement difference matters because you cannot assume your device’s step totals are directly comparable to another device's readings.
A simple way to use step data this week
Focus on steps/min during your walk, and treat estimates as “directional”
Based on the cadence–intensity evidence, a useful rule of thumb is to consider your average cadence during the walk. If you commonly sit well below 100 steps/min, intensity is less likely to match moderate levels used in the cadence research. If you hover near ~100 steps/min, the research suggests a closer match to moderate intensity as an absolute heuristic, but it still won’t be exact for every person or every device.
The limitation: the studies above do not establish that one single step total reliably tells you how hard that specific walk felt or how intense it was for you personally.
Next practical note
If you want a better “intensity read” from steps, use step cadence consistently (within the same tracker and similar walking conditions).
