After a Meal, Do Standing or Light Walking Breaks Help Your Blood Sugar?

In two acute lab studies, breaking up long sitting with light-intensity walking improved short-term post-meal glucose, while standing breaks did not. The effect was measured for only a few hours.

What the evidence tested (and what happened to glucose)

These findings come from acute experimental studies that compared multiple “sitting interruption” conditions during a set observation window after standardized meals—so they address short-term blood-sugar response, not long-term disease risk.

Study 1: non-obese adults—walking lowered post-meal glucose AUC

In a randomized three-period acute crossover trial, 10 non-obese adults did three conditions: uninterrupted sitting, 2-minute standing bouts every 20 minutes, or 2-minute light-intensity walking bouts every 20 minutes. After an initial hour of sitting, participants consumed standardized test drinks, and blood glucose was measured hourly to calculate glucose area under the curve (AUC) over 5 hours.

In that setup, the walking-break condition produced a lower glucose AUC than both uninterrupted sitting and standing breaks (walking AUC 18.5 vs 22.0 for sitting and 22.2 for standing; overall p<0.001). Importantly, uninterrupted sitting and standing breaks did not differ (p>0.05).

Study 2: older adults—walking breaks lowered glucose; standing did not

A second acute study in older adults (65–79 years) compared prolonged sitting versus breaks of standing and light walking. Across the sitting session, both break types accumulated 60 minutes total: standing was 5 minutes every 30 minutes, and walking was 5 minutes of self-paced light walking every 30 minutes. Blood samples were taken repeatedly after two standardized mixed meals.

Compared with prolonged sitting, walking breaks lowered postprandial glucose by about 0.3 mmol/L (0.1 to 0.5), along with lower blood pressure. Across outcomes reported in the extracted evidence, standing breaks did not improve results.

What’s still unresolved

These trials are informative, but they leave key questions open:

  • Small samples and specific conditions: one study had 10 participants, and both used standardized meal/drink protocols and specific break timing.
