Progressing Your Lifts With More Reps or More Weight

Ready to progress your lifts? Explore how adding repetitions and increasing weight can fit into your next stage of strength training.

Progression does not have to mean adding weight at every session. Repetitions and load can both change the work you do, but the details matter. Two studies offer ways to think about progression without proving that one method fits every exercise or lifter.

Repetition progression versus load progression

An eight-week randomized study assigned 43 resistance-trained men and women to increase load while keeping repetitions relatively constant, or increase repetitions while keeping load constant. Participants trained twice weekly, performing four sets each of back squats, leg extensions, and two calf-raise variations.

Both strategies appeared viable for improving muscular adaptations during the study. Estimates modestly favored the repetition group for rectus femoris growth and the load group for dynamic strength, but their uncertainty intervals included little or no difference. Other measured outcomes showed no notable between-group differences.

This is evidence that adding repetitions can be a useful progression option over a training block. It is not proof that a fixed weight can support unlimited progress, that all upper-body exercises respond the same way, or that adding repetitions treats joint pain.

A repetition zone is a different comparison

An exploratory secondary analysis of 24 untrained men compared progression based on a percentage of one-repetition maximum with progression using a repetition-maximum zone. Both protocols involved training to muscle failure and were evaluated across 24 sessions.

The repetition-zone group had a greater rate of volume-load progression and larger gains in muscle cross-sectional area. The analysis found no between-group differences in accumulated volume load or strength gains. This comparison was not the same as keeping weight fixed and adding repetitions in the first study. It also does not establish that training to failure is necessary, that maximum-strength testing is unsafe, or that every novice should use the tested method.

Make progression visible

A practical application is to record both load and repetitions rather than treating the weight alone as the result. If a program aims to progress repetitions, the log should make that change visible; if it aims to progress load within a repetition range, record both parts. The evidence offers more than one workable option, with the choice still depending on the program and the outcome you want to assess.
