Does Running Affect Muscle Growth More Than Cycling?

Some concurrent-training analyses have found a more unfavorable pattern with running than cycling. The evidence deserves a closer reading before treating cycling as interference-free or assuming runners cannot gain muscle. Study designs, training programs, and the level at which muscle growth is measured all affect the interpretation.
An earlier analysis raised the mode question
A 2012 meta-analysis of 21 studies examined strength, power, and hypertrophy when endurance and resistance work were combined. Its moderator analysis found decrements in strength and hypertrophy with concurrent running, while the same pattern was not detected with cycling.
It also reported negative relationships between endurance frequency or duration and some resistance-training adaptations. Those relationships across studies do not establish that changing one person's cardio mode will produce a particular improvement, or identify a running-mileage threshold that protects gains.
A moderator analysis is not the same as a single controlled experiment holding every program detail constant while changing only running to cycling. The result supplies a reason to investigate mode, rather than an automatic prescription.
Muscle fibers are a more specific outcome
A 2022 review and meta-analysis of 15 studies focused on muscle-fiber hypertrophy. It compared at least four weeks of supervised concurrent training with an otherwise identical strength-training prescription.
The overall estimate suggested a small negative effect of concurrent training on fiber growth. A subgroup finding for type I fibers was unfavorable when endurance work involved running but not cycling. The authors described that mode-related evidence as preliminary.
The paper explicitly distinguished fiber growth from whole-muscle hypertrophy. A measurement of individual fibers is not interchangeable with total muscle size, strength, or sporting performance. The analysis therefore cannot be summarized as proof that running prevents muscle gain or that cycling preserves every adaptation.
Use the finding to frame a specific choice
If muscle growth is a priority, note the amount and mode of endurance work alongside the resistance program and the outcome you track. That makes the potential trade-off clear enough to evaluate. These analyses support considering cardio mode; they do not require everyone to abandon running or establish that one option is always superior.
The useful question is which outcome and program the evidence addresses, not whether an activity has been labeled universally compatible or incompatible with lifting.
