Combining Strength and Cardio: What the Research Says for Women

Studies specifically in healthy adult women suggest that combining strength and endurance training can improve both capacities. That encouraging result does not settle a separate question: whether either gain is smaller than it would have been with one training mode alone.

What the women-focused review included

A systematic review published online in 2023 included 14 studies of concurrent training in apparently healthy adult females. The eligibility criteria focused on reproductive-age populations, with mean ages above 18 and below 50, and interventions lasting at least eight weeks. Seven studies combined lifting with running, four with cycling, and three with rowing or cross-country skiing.

The included programs generally improved measures associated with strength and endurance performance. The review nevertheless rated overall study quality as low to moderate. Most studies did not adequately consider or report circumstances such as menstrual-cycle phase, menstrual dysfunction, or hormonal contraceptive use. Evidence about rapid force production was also limited.

These limits mean the review cannot supply a menstrual-cycle-based scheduling rule or confidently generalize to every stage of life and sport.

Improvement is not the same test as interference

An earlier meta-analysis of 21 studies examined strength, power, and hypertrophy across strength-only, endurance-only, and concurrent programs or different combinations of concurrent work. Those comparisons illustrate what is required to investigate interference: the question is not simply whether a combined program produced progress, but how its outcomes compare with the relevant alternative.

The women-focused review could not assess interference because that was not the focus of its included studies and single-mode comparison groups were not always present. A finding from the broader literature cannot resolve that missing comparison for women by assumption. Nor does the lack of a definitive interference result prove that no trade-off exists.

Match confidence to the evidence

For someone planning a mixed routine, this evidence supports the possibility of improving strength and endurance together. It does not identify one optimal order, recovery interval, or hormone-based plan for all women.

When evaluating a claim that women should combine training differently, look for the population, comparison group, and outcome that were actually studied. The strongest answer here is that combined training can be beneficial, while several female-specific questions still need better direct research.
