Where Daily Water Intake Actually Comes From
Hydration targets are frequently translated into a specific number of water bottles to finish by the end of the day. Yet a substantial portion of human water intake comes from the moisture in food and other beverages.
Based on dietary recall data from 2009 to 2012, an April 2016 CDC demographic report detailed how U.S. adults met their hydration needs. The recommended adequate intake from all foods and liquids is roughly 3.7 liters for men and 2.7 liters for women. The data showed that adult men consumed an average of 3.46 liters of total water per day, and women consumed 2.75 liters. However, plain water accounted for only 30 percent of total water intake for men and 34 percent for women. The remaining 65 to 70 percent came from dietary foods and other liquids.
The report also found lower average total-water intake among adults aged 60 and over: 2.92 liters for men and 2.51 liters for women. Intake increased with reported physical activity. These are group averages from dietary-recall data, not diagnoses of dehydration or individualized fluid requirements. The report counts moisture from foods and other beverages as well as plain water, so total intake should not be confused with a plain-water drinking target.
