Managing Effort with Repetitions in Reserve
Deciding how hard to push a set—whether to hit absolute failure or stop slightly short—changes the immediate demands of a lifting session. In this study, participants performed five sets of bench presses at 80% of their one-repetition maximum. In one condition, they stopped the first four sets when they estimated they had three repetitions in reserve (3-RIR), taking only the final set to failure. The researchers found that the 3-RIR strategy allowed participants to better sustain repetitions and work across sets at a higher average bar velocity compared to the all-out approach, all while reporting a lower perceived exertion trial results.
It is important to note the study's scope: it was an acute experiment focused on barbell kinetics and perceived effort, not a long-term study on muscle hypertrophy or strength progression. While the data suggests that managing effort can help maintain performance within a single session, this finding does not establish that 3-RIR is superior for long-term physiological adaptations compared to training to failure study limitations.
The Role of Carbohydrate Availability
