Spacing Strength and Endurance for Better Adaptations

Combining strength training and endurance work in the same program, known as concurrent training, is standard practice for building well-rounded fitness. The challenge lies in minimizing the interference effect, where the residual fatigue from one workout blunts the physiological gains from the other.

An earlier study on amateur rugby players tested the recovery time needed between strength and aerobic sessions. Fifty-eight players completed seven weeks of training, with strength performed before aerobic work. Bench-press and half-squat gains were lower with no recovery gap than with six hours, 24 hours, or strength training alone. Some faster isokinetic knee-extension outcomes favored 24 hours over both shorter gaps, while changes in isometric strength were unclear. Peak oxygen uptake improved in all three concurrent-training groups, with larger improvements after 24-hour separation than after zero or six hours.

This experiment supports considering recovery time when arranging concurrent sessions, especially when maximizing particular strength or aerobic outcomes is the goal. It does not establish that every recreational athlete needs a full day between lifting and cardio. The sequence was always strength first, and the findings concern adaptations over seven weeks rather than a direct test of how every second workout feels.

Managing Interference in Team Sports

Team sports require athletes to balance strength, power, and cardiovascular endurance simultaneously, making concurrent training unavoidable. A December 2024 review of training strategies confirms that while this combined approach improves overall performance, it can easily induce excessive fatigue if not managed carefully.

The review emphasizes that appropriate programming—specifically adjusting the sequence, volume, and recovery time—is necessary to mitigate conflicting physical adaptations. Interestingly, the interference effect is not universal across all ages. The researchers observed that younger athletes, particularly those under 14, experience minimal interference from combining strength and endurance, while the broader review emphasized that sequencing, scheduling, volume, intensity, and recovery can help manage interference. This does not mean that concurrent training inevitably causes overtraining in adults.

For adult athletes in recreational leagues or structured programs, managing training volume and scheduling clear recovery days is just as important as the workouts themselves. Focus on separating heavy physical demands in the days leading up to a match to stay sharp for competition.
